Today is our last MLab material lecture day!
we started the second day of the M Lab lecture by reviewing first lecture.

Students who shares 2 things that they learned will be rewarded with a surprise gift from Suzette.
Before jumping into materials, Suzette teaches students the “6P”, which are
“Proper planning prevents piss poor performance.”

Today, the main part of the lecture is about synthetics, leather, and textures.

The first part of textures Suzette introduces to students are Release Papers (RP).
Students are having fun palying with samples from Favini and Sappi.

Release Papers are applied to a material through heat, which leaves
the textured imprint on the material, just like a decal.

The second method of texturing materials is called Emboss, which is more expensive than
Release Papers, and usually transferred to the material through a roller.

Suzette explains students the different categories of patterns, which are…
… Gloss
… Geometrics
… Grains
… Exotics
… Basket weaves

Next up: "Killing a cow!"
Students learn the different classifications of leather:
… Aniline
… Semi-Aniline
… Nubuck
… Pigmented Leather
… Pull-up Leather
… Split
… Suede
While learning about how materials and textures are made, Suzette constantly reminds
students that they should always try to tell a story by using color, shine, texture, effects.
After lunch, Tim Berglund the VP of Matmarket
gives a presentation about Clarino and synthetic micro fiber leather.
He starts off with 3 questions Matmarket always considers when inventing a new material.
… Does it solve a problem on the market?
… Is it sustainable? … Is it cost-effective?
Tim brought material samples and some of his works to make us understand easier.
We are all having fun with them!
Tim explains students the process of making synthetics which is summarized in 3 main steps:
… Substrate creation
… Wet process
… Finishing
A lot to write down and a lot to remember.
Fastest way to document!

Insightful Q&A session with Tim.

During the break, students are all gathered around near what Tim brought.

It’s time for a fun competition. Spagetti and marshmellow challenge.
Each team gets a marshmallow, 18 dried spaghetti noodles, strings, and a tape.
The goal is simple:
Which team can build the highest structure with the marshmallow on top in 18 minutes?
All ready?
Time set Go!
Everyone is enjoying the time. Tim as well.

Never been this serious with spaghetti noodles.
18 minutes passed. All stop!
Tim goes around to mesasure the height.
34 inches high, winner is Team Vans !

And the winner of building the lowest height, My team!
Yeah!

Thank you Team Clarino for a fun exercise!
Thank you Tim, Tuan, and Mavis
